Philadelphia Health Corps Special Initiatives (a partial list)

Health Insurance Advocacy: Welfare reform is having a significant impact on PHC partner sites and the communities they serve. Many people do not realize that medical insurance may be available to them and their children even if their cash benefits have changed or they have become employed. PHC members are trained to conduct outreach, case management and advocacy so that as many eligible patients and community residents as possible understand and have applied for Medical Assistance, CHIP (Child Health Insurance Program) and/or other health insurance programs.

Open Airways in Schools:This is a comprehensive health curriculum designed by the American Lung Association to teach asthma management to children with asthma. National evaluations have shown that children who complete this program have fewer asthma episodes and experience an improvement in school performance. PHC members are trained to conduct this eight-session program with the most severely asthmatic children in elementary schools near their placement sites.

Wall of Hands:Through the Wall of Hands program, PHC members teach elementary school children about ways to resolve conflicts peacefully and build healthier relationships in their schools, homes and communities. The program takes place in first through fourth grade classrooms and uses interactive teaching tools such as role-plays. When children are ready to make a commitment to incorporate the ideas of the Wall of Hands into their day-to-day lives, they recite a "Pledge of Peace" and leave their painted hand prints on a wall as a symbol of their promise.
