THE PHILADELPHIA HEALTH CORPS Contact: William Montgomery The Philadelphia Health Corps (PHC) is a program of AmeriCorps, the national and community service initiative which provides Americans of various ages and backgrounds with educational awards, a living allowance and other benefits (if eligible) in exchange for a year or two of community service. AmeriCorps members help meet the nation's critical needs in the areas of public safety, education and the environment, and human needs such as health and housing. The Philadelphia Health Corps is focused on meeting human needs and designed to "open doors to better health" in medically undeserved Philadelphia communities. Teams of PHC members are placed at community health centers and other community-based organizations, which are PHC partners. In coordination with their site supervisor, they conduct various forms of outreach, assist individuals and families in accessing health care through referrals and escorts, and conduct a wide variety of health promotion activities. The Philadelphia Health Corps is also a program of the National Health Corps with sister city projects in Pittsburgh, Chicago and northern New Mexico. For additional information click on: |
